Why I like this model
The quality of a HEPA purifier can be determined by evaluating three factors. Total CFM, air bypass and sound. A quiet, well sealed purifier isn’t going to do much good if it’s only moving a small quantity of air. This is why CFM is critical. To properly clean the air in a living room or large bedroom, you need several hundred CFM. Many HEPA units fall far short of this minimum. The IQAir HealthPro goes up to 340CFM, which is plenty for the vast majority of scenarios.
A high CFM rating can be quickly negated if it’s noisy. Our professional grade HEPA scrubbers pump out 500 CFM, but they’re far too noisy for an occupied home. The key is to find a purifier with high CFM at the lowest sound output. While the HealthPro isn’t silent, it’s much quieter than other units we’ve tested.
Lastly, a HEPA purifier is only as good as the seals around the filter. HEPA filters, by definition, make it hard for air to pass through. Unless a purifier is well sealed, the air will take the path of least resistance and go around the filter. Every put a HEPA filter on a shop style vacuum? The air goes right past it and out the overflow port. We’ve even observed filter bypass on $1,000 remediation scrubbers. It’s not easy to keep the air going through the filter.
What I don’t like about it
In a perfect world, this model would cost less. The price puts it out of reach of some customers. The quality is worth it, but I wish it were $100 less.
